Dying at idle problem solved
Finally got my idle mixture adjusted via the pilot screws. My bike had had this dying problem since new. You would be idling at a stoplight and it would just die. It wouldn't always do it but it did it enough to be annoying. I had the mixture checked and it was super lean at idle. Less than 1%.
I had this dying problem even before I put on the Two Brothers slip ons but they probably didn't help the matter. I don't have a jet kit installed as the bike runs perfect other than at idle. Anyway, the mixture has been adjusted and my Superhawk idles a lot better and it doesn't die anymore at idle. The pilot screws are adjustable but you have to have the special tool to do it so try to find a local shop that has the right angle tool with the Honda bit. Now I don't have any complaints about my bike. That was the only one. |
Shit.. they give you that tool in any jet kit. I'll send you mine if you promise to send it back ;)

Put the jet kit in it.
You will be glad you did! It will REALLY make a difference with your Two Bros exhaust ! While you are in there upgrade your pilot jets to #48 (stock is 45) Set the idle mixture screws 2 1/2 turns out if you are below 3000 feet elevation above sea level. |
Thanks CNI Dawg. I am thinking about the Factory Pro kit for later and will upgrade the pilots then. Which kit did you buy?
Hey Loco, I had the Dynajet kit adjustment tool that a friend gave me but there is no way to get your hand in there with it. Thats the tool I cut down in the machine shop at work to fit a 1/4" drive 1/4" socket so it would fit the right angle long handle tool my buddy at the local shop has so he could adjust the screws while the bike was running. Thanks for the offer though. |

Thanks for the offer though. The factory pro kit gives you #50 idle jets. I tried the #50 & they were a little too rich. (I am at 500 feet above sea level) Ordered #48* jets from http://www.highfivecycles.com/default.asp for about $5-7 each (forgot exactly how much) They had to order 5 so they still have 3 left ! |

i went with the Dyno jet kit and my bike still idles like crap does that mean i have to go back to the honda shop and make a few more adjustments? i still have my stock airfilter, i dont think a K&N would make much difference. and i am running those cliche black Jardine high mounts. i am at the end of my rope here and if i cant get this idle problem fixed then i will consider selling the Superhawk and go back to cage life for a while.

Are you below 3000 feet elevation? If so.... Idle mixture screws out 2 1/2 turns idle set to at least 1200 rpm carbs sync'd TPS set to 500ohms +/- 10 ohms the factory idle jets are #45. I changed mine to #48. I had tried the Factory Pro #50 jets but thought they were too rich. Main jets & needles set to DynoJet kit specs (I think that's 180 front, 185 rear, needles on 4th notch. - FYI - I have my needles on the 5 th notch) Do you have any vacuum leaks? Is the PAIR system still on the bike? Are the carb slides clean? (do you have the "klunk - die" problem?) Any water in your gas? ANy debris in the carb bowls that would clog the idle jets? That's all I can think of right now Good luck troubleshooting ! |

You can get the bit here. My new bike dies too. I am going to order the

I think he means just this bit for $2.90 But both the Factory Pro and Dynojet kits come with a tool for idle mixture screw. I didn't like the D shaped bit gig so cut a slot in mine with a dremel tool cutoff wheel so I can use a screwdriver. I have a new Hawk (300 miles) and am having this problem as well :( Does anyone know if I take it to the dealership will be considered warranty work? If not I can do it myself, just thought I would save a few bucks till I can afford the Leo vince pipes and the jet kit.

Good luck getting the dealer to do it. Most of them don't have the $180 factory Honda tool.

I order a motionpro remote tool with the D bit for 28.95.
I figured it was worth it since I aready have a carb sync tool. P/N WP57-8119 I want to set it while it's running and not on a bench. |

So if I took it to the dealer they would probably flog the shi* out of it for a day or two, and then call me up an say sorry we couldn't notice the poblem.

I have a good dealer they just didn't have the tool. My buddy that works there would have adjusted it for me. He gave me the dynojet tool and I cut it down to fit another buddys long handle right angle adjustment tool. He didn't have the D shaped bit.
I cut most of the base off the tool and made it fit inside a quarter inch drive 1/4" socket. I gave him the tool for adjusting it for me. |
