The dreaded question - Insurance
Hi all,
I just purchased a Honda Firestorm (the owner's manual is actually for a Superhawk). So I'm getting some insurance quotes and the agents give a multitude of options. Public liability (minimum required in my province in Canada), theft, vandalism, collision. So I'm curious now, what insurance do most riders have? This topic may not generate much discussion but any feedback would be appreciated |
I have state required liability, plus theft and fire. I can't imagine making a claim on a bike that I wrecked if it was my own fault. I know people do it, but it just seems odd to me.
|
Liability and medical payments here, pretty cheap through Progressive.
|
i got the whole shebang through progressive. Costs about $500 for full coverage on a yearly basis. One of the saving graces of the Hawk is that it's not considered a full blown sport bike so it reflects in the insurance payments. I'm not necessarily a low risk person either. I'm 25 with little previous riding experience. i was actually kind of surprised that my rates were not higher
|
$500/year isn't bad for full coverage at all. My policy ran $90/year for decent 100/300 liablility only and 5k medical.
|
You dont need any insurance up in Canada the riding season is only 1 week long.:)
Seriously I have full coverage. It was only a couple more bucks than the minimum. |
$128.00 (not per month.. just one payment) every 6 months... Just Liability as I have GREAT health insurance through my job.
|
I sure as hell cant figure it out. I'm a 40-year-old with a clean driving record and it costs me $244/yr for liablility only. Going to full coverage boosts it to over $900. With Geico no less. Progressive was even higher. My regular insurance co for everything else (American Family) wont even write it. Are you guys insuring other vehicles as well to get the price down?
|
Geico ~$100/year for me and wife combined (laibility with low medical). I think the key to the low cost policy, is low miles per year. We tell them that we only use the bikes for pleasure and put ~3K miles each per year. These are the only vehicles we insured with Geico.
|
It all depends on where you live, your age and driving record, and how that insurance company classifies your bike.
|
+1 progressive multi-bike multi-car & house all w/ same agent is the key to $500/yr. full coverage
|
Different companies classified the same users and bikes different. My truck is trough Allstate, its still a ripoff but I pay it..should change to Progressive on that too. But they wanted several hundred a month, just for liability on the Superhawk. My driving record is spotless, good credit, took the MCF course, listed it as "Pleasure Use". I'd just keep shopping around. Takes a few hours to get a bunch of quotes, but it will save you enough each year to buy some extra goodies.

I have state farm. $40/month for full coverage. The nice thing about state farm is that they don't care if it's a sport bike, their pricing is based on engine displacement.
|
I'm in So. California and have the minimum legal required liability from McGraw's. I pay $80 per year.
|
a lot of people have the minimum but i would take a serious look into what that entails.
think about medical bills & if/or you have standard medical insurance if they have subrogation rights. also look into how your state deals with underinsured motorist. usually going up a step or two in coverage is a minor increase in fees. tim |
I live in Ontario, I'm 57 and I have a clean driving record. I pay about $900 per year through Primmum. That's for $1,000,000 liability and other mandatory coverage. No fire and theft. I didn't know whether to laugh or throw up when I read that RK1 paid $80 per year.

I may pass on the collision but given some of the comments here I'm definitely going to go beyond the basic $1,000,000 liability. |

I'm in the true North strong and free. I don't think you can buy less than $1,000,000 in liability but I stand to be corrected. The million could come in handy if I hit a crate full of highly trained peregrine falcons that fell off a truck while being transported to a Saudi prince. Could happen.

Now, if you were to somehow mistakenly driving the wrong way down a runway while one these jets was taking off with its feathered cargo, causing complete destruction of everything in sight...maybe the jet even skids into a tanker full of a few hundred thousand gallons of AV fuel that is sitting next to a crate with the latest NASA satellite in it...yes, you may need more than a $1M policy. But then again, even if you lived, you'd probably be dead a short time later after the head honcho finds out his bird is reduced to original extra crispy style, so I'd just not bother. |
Mine is $382 per year for 100/300 of liability and uninsured motorist from Foremost. That's about $32 per month. 28 yrs old, riding for 1 year. Sounds like I could do better.
I guess I don't mind much, as I ride it daily. |
For comparison:
2003 SV1000S. 30 yr old rider, clean record, Connecticut resident. 50/100 bodily injury liability 50/100 passenger bodily liability 25000 property damage liability 50/100 uninsured (other driver) bodily injury 500 deductible collision 3000 optional equipment $371 for full year with Dairyland Insurance. I recommend the uninsured coverage for anyone in the area as insurance is not required for NH residents and they have some great roads. Just mailed a payment yesterday and I'm watching it snow today. boo. |
1999 Honda SH
23 yr old minimum coverage through Progressive : $114 a year. Can't beat that. |
21 yr old with a DUI when i was 19
'01 superhawk minumum Full Coverage 25k/50k 1k medical $600 a year with $500 deductables (would have been over $1k/yr if i had gotten lower deductables) but not for long... two speeding tickets in the last six months.. so it should go up to about $1000 a year dont you feel better after reading how much i pay? lol been riding for 6 years, but just picked up the shawk last year... DUI was in my pickup, hardly drink anymore, and never drink and drive... |
I have coverage with Foremost Ins, a subsidiary of Illinois Farmers Insurance. Farmers won't cover sport bikes, so they do it thru Foremost. Not sure what the point of that is...
I have all my insurance with Farmers: Homeowners and 2 vehicles (an Accord and a Tocoma) so I have all the multiple discounts available. When I first insured the bike, it was $1100 for the whole year in 2003. It had slowly decreased to $900 or so until last year when it dropped to $560. Just paid this year's bill yesterday, and it's now $290. Don't know why it's dropped, don't care why... |
17/month for 500 deductible full coverage...State Farm. Went from 1200/year to around 200/year once I hit 25.
|
98 VTR. Ottawa ,Ontario Canada. 28 years riding .No accidents.Clean driving record. 968 $ full coverage for a year .State Farm......
|
50/100 bodily injury liability
50/100 passenger bodily liability 25000 property damage liability 50/100 uninsured (other driver) bodily injury 500 deductible collision 3000 optional equipment $160 for full year with Dairyland Insurance. because I'm old. just paid it also, and it's 34 degrees outside |
In WA state its not required to have any insurance at all (which may keep things a little lower here). I'm paying $17 a month for full coverage. Off the top of my head I don't recall the limits though.
I had a turbocharged Busa a few years back that Progressive wanted ~$4200 a year to insure (lowest quote too!). Didn't carry coverage on that one :) |
