Clicking sound, help!!

I was driving to work today, and noticed a clicking sound in my engine.

I stopped the bike, and it seems like it is from the sylinders. I only hear it when the engine idles. Could this be the cct?

I dont hear it all the time, and only when the engine is hot.

Anybody know what this is????

Check the oil ?

Could be valves ticking a bit.... or a slight exhaust leak.... how many miles and when was the last valve check?

J.

+1 on the valves, solid lifters need periodic adjustments, that said, I should do mine 32 000 km would be a good time to check

swordfish 06-28-2007 08:49 AM

first adjustment is scheduled at 18,000 miles.

Check the flare nuts that hold the headers to the cylinder. Tiny exhaust leaks will sound like a ticking.

+1 on the valves ticking. Mine will do that maybe twice a year for no apparent reason. So if it's intermittent like that, then I wouldn't worry about it.

when i drove to the garage yeaterday, the cliking sound got worse. It sounds like metal hitting metal.

The guys at the garage, heard the sound, but then it suddenly stoppet, and was back to normal.

But they were not sure about the cct, so they are going to change them.

But could it be the valves?

My bike only has 11000 miles on it.

If that sound can stop like this, I doubt it the valve adjustment. I twill tick all the time, maybe more engine cold.

svennis 07-01-2007 11:14 PM

I dont think it is the valves, the sound is not like ticking.

The sound is more uneven, it comes and goes, louder and then more soft.

When rev the engine, it goes away, and when i drive, it is not there. Only when it idles, and only when it is hot.

We need a forum just for sounds.. It would make Searching and IDing them a little esier. Also the hawk makes so many noises that are "normal", might be an Idea! I say we change the "ebay" forum to "Sounds"

falcondrvr 07-02-2007 07:40 PM

Not a bad idea Arctic Fire.

That sound could be the carb slides clicking... At least that's what i tell myself. My bike has always made a sound like that. I've had it for 5000 miles and no trouble.

Hawkrider 07-02-2007 09:01 PM

Normally the slides are all the way closed at idle and only start to chatter at part throttle. I don't think it's carb slides in this case.

The bike is in the garage now, and im changing the cct`s

I changed the oil about two weeks ago, and put on a unoriginal oil filter, it seemed smaller in size, but it fit around the edges, could it be that the engine is not getting enough oil?

falcondrvr 07-03-2007 05:13 AM

Normally the slides are all the way closed at idle
good point.

I wish I could hear a 2005 brand new off the floor, but I have yet to meet up with one. It would put all my fears to rest :)

Solid lifters? Correct me if I'm wrong but the last time I checked my valves I saw a shim under bucket setup with dual overhead cams.

gboezio 07-03-2007 08:05 PM

Solid mean not hydraulic.

svennis 07-09-2007 04:15 AM

Got the bike back from the sho the other day.

The mechanic asked me if i bet on the lottery?? He said i was the luckiest guy he had met.

The cam chain was all loose, and it was just a matter of time before the engine would have gone to hell...

Now the engine sounds great again, and it seems like it runs more evenly also.

Glad you got her fixed and yes go buy a lottery ticket just in cast it ain't over yet.
