CARB BACKFIRE FIXES PROBLEM?

So I still had'nt pulled my carbs to see if I could resolve the issue with a flat spot. Last night I pull up to a stop sign and I'm blipping the throttle. I get two consecutive small carb backfires and ever since, it's run perfect! I'm going to take her out to stretch her legs tomorrow. I'll report back with results. It sure would be nice if the problem is resolved, regardless of the technique leading to the resolution!

Sounds like a passage got clogged when the fuel line broke. The pressure wave from the backfire cleared the blockage. Be prepared for it to happen again as whatever caused the problem might still be in the float bowl and could clog something up again.... ;)

But I don't want it to clog something again!

Pull the carbs and clean out the float bowls and blow out the jets....... that is if it does it again.

The thing produces huge grins when it runs right. It is absolutely priceless to be able to just pluck the front end up with a flick of the wrist! I've missed it.

So how it running today??

ranchomice 07-07-2010 10:43 PM

It ran flawless. I took it out on a 70 mile canyon twisty ride and it gave me no problems at all. This was actually my first time out on my own where I could get as agressive as a wanted and it felt pretty good. I have nothing (for many years) to compare it to but it seemed to handle pretty good to me. I won't be changing the second fuel line for a bit. I'm afraid to touch it while it's runnig right!

along the lines of carb backfires

just picked up a 99 with <10k miles. clean. starts right up. runs hard. love the slamming of pistons under my legs at low rpms!

is it recommended to spray carb cleaner into air intake, or seafoam into the gas, or is a deep clean of the carbs a prefered method?

i have a random backfire while at idle, and then heard it a few times on engine braking.
caused a few stop sign engine kills. id just like to solve the issue before it causes other problems.

friend said replace spark plugs, but they are clean.

what is in your guys knowledgebase of carbs? mine is newb, but im learning every day! i came from an inline4 fuel injected

-b

ps.. oh yeah stock.

Send hawk8541 a message, he's a knowledge base in and of himself! He has done some work on mine and he knows this bike extremely well.
