BEST SPARK PLUG FOR THE HAWK

jUST CURIOUS, what are you guy's using to spark your Hawk..........I have the 99 version:confused:

Cleveland 11-17-2008 06:56 AM

It has to be the Iridium (i forget the #) ones.. I have been advised by EVERYONE I talked to (from multiple members of this board to my local shoppie) that if you try to go cheap, 'hawks just dont like it.. They are REAL pricey... like $12-15 bucks each.. I wanted to go with the couple dollar ACDelco ones that crossed, but was advised against it.

I'd like to know why the hawk HAS to have the pricey sparkplugs.. but havent gotten an explaination, yet..

chevy 11-17-2008 07:05 AM

i guess it goes back to getting what you pay for........for me something like spark plugs i figure i won't hesitate to get the best.

So the Iridium huh?

NGK DPR9EVX-9

lazn 11-17-2008 08:02 AM

It's a large hot low RPM engine.. You need a plug that doesn't foul easily.

what r u using on your hawk.plug thats hard to foul

Blue Ridge Boy 11-17-2008 08:28 AM

NGK is the best IMO. NGK is also what is recommended by manufacturers.
In my first engine...I had the same plugs in it for over 20k with no issues what so ever.
They are also only $6.95 at my shop...so not too expensive.

Reason 11-17-2008 08:53 AM

Anybody tried these?

WTF? Pulstar™ plugs have a spark 10 times the size and power of all other spark plugs on the market How's that? Do they have a capacitor built in? If you put in 50 watts... the output should be the same (minus heat loss due to resistance).. Man, I dont get it.. I need more info...

Ok.. read more.. and YES they do incorporate a capacitor.. Pulse plugs may look similar to spark plugs on the outside, but inside the technological advances of Pulstar are evident. Pulse plugs feature a unique capacitor-based circuit that captures energy normally wasted by spark plugs and generates a spark with 10 times greater energy than any spark plug.

WHOA!!!! $25/each!!! Interest gone.

Cleveland 11-17-2008 10:09 AM

lol.. $200 for plugs for my truck.. Um yeah.. for 6 hp.. Yeah, right. $50 for the bike?.. Nah, too rich for my blood..

Cleveland 11-17-2008 10:10 AM

Sounds like a great idea.. and definitely SOUNDS viable.. just not economically feasable.

Reason 11-17-2008 10:53 AM

Hmm, possibly valid according to this thread:
http://tsx.acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=673870

This guy was able to measure an improvement on the dyno, although he says he was in the market for replacements anyway, so maybe the old plugs were dragging down the "before" figures.

Most of the stuff I can find seems to indicate that pulstars won't hurt and do help, but not too much. Lessee, $50 for 2, less $15 you'd pay for regular plugs anyway = $35 premium. I'd pay $35 if it demonstrably gave me a minimum 3 more hp. I kinda doubt that though.

Its not the evx's, its the eix for the NGK. The suffix means that it is iridium and four groung strap. K's, as in eik would be dual ground.

NKG they work great for me

rbrais 11-17-2008 12:36 PM

Still have the stockers.

The EVX's are what come stock. I'm saying that you don't need the iridium. I have the stockers and they work great.

Hawkrider 11-17-2008 05:51 PM

EVX's are discontinued. If you can find them they are new-old stock. The replacement are the EIX iridiums. Same price - better plug.

RK1 11-17-2008 06:26 PM

When I needed new plugs a few months ago I checked to see if any other maker made one and cross referenced it to the spec NGK. Couldn't find one.

skokievtr 11-17-2008 07:18 PM

ND makes an eq n der d'sht 2, they've 1 up'd NGK with a cobalt 90 coating, talk bout hot!

We are still getting 'em here at our shop. We haven't had to start carrying the iridium plugs yet.

RPV-Hawk 11-19-2008 09:32 AM

Plustar plugs are the same "technology" as "nology hotwires" http://www.nology.com/hot.html

HotWires are engineered with a special built-in capacitor, exclusive only to HotWires. This revolutionary design allows energy from the ignition coil to accumulate in the capacitor until the voltage at the spark plug electrodes reaches the ionization point. At that split second point the entire power of the stored spark is discharged at once, creating a spark 300 times more powerful
Sound familar to pulstar plugs?

Hrmm. wonder what would happen if you combined the two? *lol*

no one would ever hear from you again

Hawkrider 11-19-2008 03:05 PM

Is that akin to "crossing the streams"?

RPV-Hawk 11-19-2008 04:10 PM

I think it might be. Or you'd get one big, really fing fast spark that would fuse the sparkplug electrode into a mobius loop.

chevy 11-20-2008 12:02 PM

I tell you one thing...........i love the the level of knowledge on this forum........knowledge is power!

I think I like the NGK

inderocker 11-20-2008 08:11 PM

Cross threaded AC Delco's.... the only plug to run!!

LineArrayNut 11-21-2008 06:53 AM

why not just get rid of the resistive wires and resistor sparkplugs? we don't have radios or computers, right? :)

It could mess up the signal in the CDI box. I have seen this in sleds that didn't run resistor plugs.
