Anyone have a radar detector mounted?
 

Anyone done this on their Superhawk? I use Waze on my helmet radio but I need all the protection I can get as I commute on this half the time.

I have an escort passport, a Cobra Roadscout (which includes a dash camera), and a Valentine 1 at my disposal. I really don't want to mount on the helmet, I'd have to spend even more on a cordless one that aren't as good.

I can fit them under the windscreen but they block most of my gages. There's very little room that clears the bars, plus my clipons have a 1" rise to them. Next option is a custom bracket that mounts to the mirror bracket outside the fairing..

Or maybe hide the detector somewhere and just wire up the little cig plug accessory in front to alert me with its blinking lights... not sure if I'll hear it.

Yamaha R1 Mirrors with extenders between grafted VTR OEM mirror mounts
I run RD hard wired in/on ALL my vehicles, have so for 25+ years going back to the original Fuzz Buster.

I have a ZG DB screen and use the RD OEM suction mount though stabilized with a foam damping block Velcro'd in place. Yes it partially blocks the tacho in the upper range but so what, if you need to see revs at that road speed you'll get yourself in trouble taking your eyes off the road. Anyway, I bought my 98 new and know what its doing just by sound and feel.

BTW, I have reduced draw on the alternator by installing a Mosfet VR-R, converted ALL lighting including the headlight to LED, and have 5 different power sources for SAE, Coaxial & USB powered devices.

It still gets up and goes and is sneaky fast and stops and turns like a dream, just my body can't keep up besides higher bars, lower pegs and a custom saddle :-(

I have been using a detector on the bike for a number of years. It has save me many, many times.

The zip ties were temporary as I worked out how to attache the detector to the mount. Ended up using super strength Velcro. Also moved the sending unit to the vertical portion of the mount. After the fork swap the nut on the top of the steering stem no longer fit so I found a fitting that I adapted to fit into the stem, similar to the Ram Mount stem mount.

Gonna have to try and revive this old thread - what size mount did you get from adaptivtech Xeris? that looks perfect for what I need. I'm seeing sizes from 27 all the way up to 36. Thanks!

I think that the mount that fits the stock SH is 24 30. I had to change the bottom of the mount where it threads on to the steering stem when I changeed forks. I'll be back home in a couple of days and can check my records and measure the mount nut for dimensions.
The mount has held up well and is just high enough to get a clear line over the instruments.

I just modified the RD suction cup mount bracket angle to set the unit level adhered to the inside of my ancient ZG DB. For added adhesion I used the loop side of a patch of Velcro to the screen, a another patch of hook to avedge of HD foam that on its opposite side has another patch of Velco hook that grags a fourth patch of loop bonded to the top of the RD. This assembly also serves as a vibration damper. Finally, I created a thin plastic "hat bill" that extends out over the RDs indicator lights so in bright sunlight I can make out which lights illuminate. Though last adaption is a extension cord I soldered up with a 2.5 mm plug to 3.5 mm jack. The plug inserts into the RD tone output jack and the other end of the cords jack is wrapped circumfercially with Velcro hook that permits it to extend and adhere to a corresponding Velcro hook patch on the left middle top of the fuel tank. This cord thus mutes the RDs tone output until I plug in an mono ear bud with of course more Velcro ook thst sticks to the lining if my helmet located immediately behind the left stereo speaker for initially my Cardo Q3 when I eventually got one, and then later a Packtalk, with the ear bud cord hanging down and extending to the RD sound output jack on the tank. Midway down the length of the earbud cord is a 2 inch length of heavy wall rubber hose split lengthwise and adhered around the OD of the ear bud cord with thin double-sided tape that snaps into telephone cord clip adhered near the tank filler cap so the earbud cord does not blow around in the wind.

Yes having the earbud cord hanging from my helmets and hooking it up is a PITA but I grew accustomed to the affair. Later, when wireless Bluetooth dongles came into being I tried one that would connect to my Cardo comm unit but there was an incapatability and I gave up that route. There are other signaling light devices that may work but I learned the meaning of the RD warning tones, and audible alerts don't require looking elsewhere but at the road and environment around you without needing to divert and look down at the instruments.

Old school but so am I and I learned to fly classic motorcycles and classic fixed wing single engine aircraft back in 1970, and there's something to be said for the reliability and performance of old fashioned analog devislces!!!

However, these days I ride my VTRs so rarely and at a pace that obviates the need for an early warning device, so I have dispensed with running a RD altogether. Regardless, I'd never try to run when caught,as you can't outrun a radio and helo...
