This annoying seat

My seat latch in the back does not want to function properly
99 vtr US model
Only thing in a year and a half this bike has ever given me an issue with

The latch will stay closed if you take it off and put it closed andbolt it back and put the seat down and youre fine and it's latched

Once you unlock it
It won't return
And the seat likes to moves about unlocked
Anyone know any tricks outside of copious amounts of pb to make it work or a place to buy them that isn't crazy expensive

Lube the lock.

Also the key part returns to normal position but the actual latch does not

Yes lube it now or it will fail permanently and you will be on here asking how to get a seat off with no working latch. Don't ask me how I know.

The mechanism is cheap on ebay but lube it or loose it.

take the latch apart and clean it real good then some white petrolium or the like to it.

If your problem is the same as what I had with the seat, then you'll need to bend, to a more perpendicular position, the wire loops that are attached to the sub frame. Worked for me.

my latch mechanism shit the bed years ago. i replaced and carried on.

If you lube don't use wd40 use like silicone. Wd will gum up after a while.

smokinjoe73 10-19-2016 01:18 PM

As for lube, triflow is really some of the best, but no matter what you have to keep your eye on it. It is just dying to fail again.

Thanks for all the replies
Ended up taking it part cleaning the heck out of it
Moved the seat hook more rear
And replaced it with a more robust spring
Seems to be so far so good

:cool:Don't got too strong on that spring, don't want to make it an ejection seat.

Seat lock help

Can someone post a picture of the seat lock and the cable under the seat , I bought a basket case and can't figure how the cable routs without getting a kink in it, maybe I have the lock installed wrong but it seems like it will only go in one way ? Thanks, 2003 superhawk

www.vtr1000.org ? View topic - rear seat cover stuck

and you might find it useful to download the Honda Service manual for the VTR with useful diagrams

Thanks for the photo

From the looks of the photo I had it right it just seems like the cable has too much of a bend in it , but as long as I can get the seat off when needed all is good . My 500.00 superhawk should be on the road soon. Thanks again for the photo

Is it possible to get a replacement seat lock mechanism these days? The bike I picked up has a broken one. I think the whole thing needs to be replaced.

smokinjoe73 06-10-2017 06:27 PM

Yeah ebay

LOL! Mine wasn't "broken". Once I looked at it, I found it had come apart and the PO took it apart the rest of the way. I reassembled it and lubed everything. Works like new.
