530/520 conversion kits

this goes along with my other thread about sprockets. Some people like the 520, some people prefer the steel sprockets for longevity. Anyways I'm curious as to what everyone's using and impressions on various companies. I know I've seen some 520 kits where the sprockets are dropping teeth pretty quickly.

I'm just looking at getting vortex steel sprockets and not sure of the chain yet

nuhawk 01-15-2007 11:37 AM

And if I may piggyback this post. . . I am installing a 15T front, stock chain is still good, can I take up the one tooth drop with adjustment or will I have to remove a link in the chain? Thanks #09!

Alan 01-15-2007 11:40 AM

I use Renthal 16t front and 43t rear sprockets with a tsubaki x ring gold chain 530 and have no complaints

Lazy Lightning 01-15-2007 12:18 PM

Hmm...Sounds like someone got a new job and is looking to spend that extra $$ ;-). Congrats man!

EngineNoO9 01-15-2007 12:20 PM

heh. well that but some is just maintenance that's been put off cause I didn't have the extra $$$ to spare

superhawk22 01-15-2007 12:21 PM

I did the sum of all parts ebay 520 conversion which comes with a steel front and Vortex,(crap), aluminum rear. The rear didn't last too long and looked like the English Channel when it was done, since changed to a Sprocket Specialist and has been NP since. The new x ring chains are plenty strong enough for our bikes, it'll be 2years of track days and occassional street rides,(with plenty of :wheelie: action), in June without much stretching at all.

EngineNoO9 01-15-2007 12:25 PM

so basically as long as you get a good 520 sprocket you're fine? and yeah that does make me wonder about chain length... I'm an utter noob at that and looking at chains things come in 120 links and I'm like ok... so does that fit mine or what? lol

superhawk22 01-15-2007 12:31 PM

Yes, get either a good hardened aluminum or steel sprocket and an x ring chain and you will be fine. I forget what stock length is as mine was longer for the 43 rear but I'm sure someone else knows. Also make sure you get the right length or you will need the tool or an experienced mech. to put the pressed link on. Don't use a chain that has the clip master link they aren't strong enough, pressed only.

Alan 01-15-2007 12:42 PM

Stock length is 102

superhawk22 01-15-2007 12:46 PM

There ya go!

EngineNoO9 01-15-2007 12:48 PM

mind pointing me in the direction of some kits for our bike? I'm looking on like kneedraggers and see the sprockets np... but chains aren't to length and well I'd like a kit just to make it simple. Guess I could just call terrapowersports heh

marmaladedad 01-15-2007 01:02 PM

Took the words right out of my mouth!

Some chains do not come with a specific # of links for bikes - ie, they will come with 110 links and you'd just have to cut it down. Always measure twice before cutting off links, though. A friend of mine didn't pay attention to which rivet he was removing and ended up one link short.

+1 on rivet-mount (as opposed to clip-style).

nuhawk, I don't recall whether or not that change will require taking off a link. At worst, you can install the new sprocket and then see if the chain is too long for adjusting.

EngineNoO9 01-15-2007 01:09 PM

well I'd be willing to bet with -1 on a new chain for stock length you'd be fine cause you have the ability to adjust using the adjusters for the rear wheel to compensate. if it's a difference of more then a few links then there's probably issues

nuhawk 01-15-2007 01:31 PM

Thanks, #09! That's what I was thinking but I wanted to confirm it rather than doing the on & off again thing.

SNGPerformance 01-15-2007 06:01 PM

Motomummy.com will take good care of you!! Corey has great customer service. Tell him SNGPerformance sent you!!

nuhawk 01-15-2007 08:22 PM

I just read the Corey saga! Man, I just about fell out the freekin' chair laughing. Obviously a good guy! Not all of us could belly up to that and take it the way he did. The forum server puked after 23 pages but it was a good read while it lasted. I will add him to my supplier list although it doesn't look like he stocks much for VTR's. Great post, good grins, thanks! :winner:

Speed_Demon 01-15-2007 08:33 PM

Yeah cheap rwhp until they wear out. If you do go 520 take the previous advice and get quality sprockets and most importantly a good chain.

I made my own conversion kit from these parts. Everything works great so far and cheaper than any of the kits I saw.

You shouldnt have to change the chain length with up to a two tooth total difference. (I have -1, +2, and the stock chain length)

cheers

nuhawk 01-16-2007 04:45 PM

JJ - you're golden! Thanks! :headbang:

EngineNoO9 01-16-2007 06:30 PM

can we confirm the top speed talk? -1 or +2 shouldn't, but -1/+2 should.... I know at least one of you tracks their bike and I remember a thread saying you topped it out on the backstretch of some track at 145 or something... Don't remember the gearing though

killer5280 01-17-2007 09:54 AM

http://www.sportrider.com/tech/146_0008_gearing/

Here's an article about gearing from Sport Rider. Using this formula and using their figure of 80 inches for rear tire circumference (I didn't measure mine) I came up with a top speed of 155.4 at 9500 rpm for a Super Hawk with 15/43 gearing. That's a bit faster than the bike will go stock if the Hawk will pull that rpm in 6th gear with the 15/43 setup (and I suspect it will).

EngineNoO9 01-17-2007 02:47 PM

hmm... I calculated it out and was chatting with my buddy who said indicated his topped out at 160. Question for those running different gears? How does your top end feel? My friend has -1 front and said he felt almost like the top end was slower. Granted he was also following his buddy on a busa so that could've been the reason :P

I think that was me. that was +2 in the rear 530. it's never felt any top end problems to me. but I don't do any long strech runs to test it. the track was texas world speed way so your running the lengh of a nascar straight. I'm actualy going to be so a 520 15/43 conversion my self as I always ran ont of track before I ran out of motor so I'm going to be looking for som 45t and 46t for the rear too

EngineNoO9 01-17-2007 03:38 PM

nice. I think I may switch to the -1/+2. If I don't like it I can always buy another sprocket and switch easily.

killer5280 01-17-2007 03:43 PM

Like I said in an earlier post, I like it with these gears and I don't think there is a top speed penalty and may in fact go faster on top. I never go that fast anyway. Others feel that it's a bit too revvy for a street ride and I can certainly understand that.

any answer to this question? i am going to swap a 15 tooth sprocket in....

EngineNoO9 01-18-2007 08:55 AM

there shouldn't be any issue with top end since every gear should be shorter. I was having brain fart yesterday but unless there's something drastic that I'm overlooking, then there's no way you would be slower in any gear

superhawk22 01-18-2007 09:32 AM

It won't be any slower it just will raise the rpm's by around 1000 or so. That's the only reason I switched back to the 41 rear for the street but it's not bad on the track either. Before the Vortex gave out I used one for the track and the other for the street.
