520 chain
 

Has anyone changed to a 520 pitch chain (with rear alum. sprocket) from a standard 530 set-up (with steel rear sprocket) WITHOUT altering the gearing (thus enabling to isolate the effect strictly to teh chain and sprocket switch)? If yes, did you notice any difference in acceleration/response?

I ask as the kits available on eBay mention a 2% increase in dyno hp (result of loss in reciprocating mass) so I was wondering if anyone has experimented with this.

Don't be shy now, no one bites!

I think that most of us who did the conversion also went for the sprocket change as well. As you know with both there's no way I could tell you if the weight loss alone did anything, sorry.

Every little bit helps, especially if you already have a lightened flywheel. The chains are lighter, and the ally sprocket is too. It all adds up.

But I can't offer you any proof either.

your thinking is in line with mine; logically it HAS to help, I was jut hoping to get input from soemone who has actually tried it.

Going well actually.

Tomorrow I am taking it to an exhaust shop to make up some pipes to join my Staintune mufflers to my Moriwaki Ti headers. I have the mufflers in a custom mid mount position so I need custom mid pipes.

I need to sort out the new brake and clutch lines to get them made, and then organise the new fuel line fittings to match my 2004 19 litre tank to my 1998 model bike as they are different.

I am also seeing someone tomorrow about getting my gauges re-painted. After that is doen I will need to sort out some wiring for my new indicators and a few bits and pieces.

Looks like in a few weeks it might be a goer!!!

I've talked to my parts guy about the conversion and he told me that it's great if you're using the bike for racing, but it's just not practical for a normal rider. The sprockets and chain wear out faster, so those who have only one bike and do this mod usually have a second rear wheel with a steel sprocket, the 530 chain, etc. so they can switch back and forth depending on how they're riding.

I've had mine set up like this for over a year now and have had no signifigant wear as of yet. I and as you can see yes I ride hard, including the occasional wheelie,(like every occasion). :lol:

I have a 520 chain and AFAM sprockets with plenty of life left if anybody's interested. I can send pictures.

Carnage, I would agree if you were using a standard type chain. However with a high quality X or Z ring type chain it could be argued that they are actually stronger the the OEM 530.

Regina and EK advertise that their premium chains are about 20% stronger than standard.
