in one of your hotels, were you watching the nhl entry draft???
i've had pilot roads. great tire, last a long time and have reasonable grip.

Cheapo that was a great write up of what must have been a trip of a lifetime,well done!
I've been lucky enough to have traveled many of the roads you did,but with 18 wheels underneath me and hope to one day do the Rocky Mtns. on 2 wheels.
Maybe your next trip should be the Black Hills in SD and on to the Tetons in WY. If you ever do that,let me know 'cause I would be up for it in a heartbeat.

Looks like a great ride Cheapo, reminds me of my last road trip with a good friend a couple yrs. ago. Just wondering how the bike handled with all that weight on the tail. Bet it was real easy to get the front up. Great pics. Damn, makes me want to start planing a trip.

You deserve the Iron Butt and ***** Award.I have a connection with the photo of your bike on the Million Dollar Highway with the 3 power lines running behind it. That area is called Chattanooga, it's an old mining district. The steep slope in the background from center to the right edge of the photo is part of 135 acres of mining claims that I inherited from my Dad.
My Grandfather died in Silverton in the late 1930's after mining the claims for several years. He didn't get rich.
My wife and I have driven (cage) the 550 at least a dozen times in the last 15 years. The guys on the forum cannot really appreciate your narration about the steep drop-offs with NO shoulder. We were behind a guy on a GoldWing a few years ago in the rain. He was taking the corners at 10 mph max, and I was keeping my distance so as not to pressure him.
How did the SuperHawk run over Red Mountain Pass, at over 11,000 feet?
Also my wife (on her SV650S) and I rode Angeles Crest Highway on Tuesday June 23. It would have been cool to run into you at Newcombs. Glad you had a safe and memorable journey.

Well, the reason Cheap did this trip was to deliver my bike to LA for me. I bought it from Cheap's brother in law a few months back and I am arriving in the US late in August (from Australia) with another Aussie and we are joining Dano (from the blog) and riding back to North Carolina (staying with Cheap) for a rally with about 50 guys from thespeedtriple.com. After 3 days with these hooligans we will be turning around and heading back to California by a different route. We'll do around 7000 miles in 3 weeks. So be prepared for another marathon blog with pics late in September when I get back to OZ. Should be plenty of pics from the Blue ridge parkway, the Cherohala Skyway, Monument Valley and the Grand Canyon among other places.

Just had to stop and say what a good post this was! Way to go man - thats some serious ridin'! My bum can only take at the max about 190 something miles before it wants to quit with that stock seat. :P

Spaz, the Hawk seat can be a little rough on the bum, but hell, after ya get settled into it, it's not as bad as you'd think. My biggest day was right at 630 miles, but I could have easily done 750-800 had it not been for the heat that day. Well alright, not easily, but it's doable.
And no, no ironbutt awards, I'm purdy sure the lowest rank they have, you have to complete 1k miles in 24 hrs.

wicked story behind this trip. You were delivering a bike 3700 miles? HAHAHA that is a good one. Just wait until you are old and gray and keep mumbling about that time you went out west. Man, things were different back then...

yep, it was funny telling the story along my trip. Especially when I told people that an Australian bought the bike who I've never even met.
It is a great story, and the story will just get better in less than 2 months once I finally get to meet Legman once he flys into LA and then rides the Superhawk back over here. I am very grateful for the opportunity that was given me, that's for sure.

Okay, you da man! The most I've ridden in one day is in the mid 500s, and that was a butt buster. Doing successive multi-hundred mile days on the SH is not something I would choose to do in the future if I could afford otherwise.
