2001 VTR1000 Emissions
 

I am looking into buying a 2001 Superhawk located in Arizona. I live in California and I would like to have somebody confirming that the bike is certified for emissions in 50 states and it can be registered also in California. Thanks a lot!! :thumbsup:

Generally, consumer vehicles sold in the US during the last 20 years should comply with California Emission Standards. The reason is that CA has the strictest emission requirements and the manufactures know that if their vehicles comply with CA then their vehicles will comply with the standards of the remaining 50 jurisdictions (don't forget D.C.). So, that's the long answer to "probably yes, it will have CA smog ."

According to the CA DMV, on every vehicle there should be a label indicating if it complies with the California smog regulations.

There are instances where a vehicle is offered in two versions, a California version and a "rest of US" version. I don't have my shop manual with me but tht information is surely included in it. I know, for example, that the CA version has a charcoal canister, something that may or may not be on other US models (not on mine but then mine is a Canadian Firestorm version). I hope this helps.

I took a look at the service manual and it looks like the California version mounts a different fuel system (VPT3C Vs. VPT3B). I think I’m doomed. :(

Isn't there a CA law that states CA emissions are not required if you have XXXX number of miles on it?

I checked, you are right. Above 7500mi you don't need to smog the bike anymore. Thanks God !!! :D

Actually, you never have to smog the bike. If it is a CA emissions bike, you can remove the smog equipment and no one will be the wiser.

Only cars have to go through the smog check process...

All that is true but they will be more expensive to register, instead of making u smog your bike, the CA dmv will just make u pay an ass load. Friend of mine bought an out of state R1, had a hard time registering it, in the end, he just had to pay something like 250 bucks.

so, does anyone know about the different emissions controls on the VTRs? i would like to know what they are!

In az I have to get my SH emissions tested once a year. Kinda silly as all they do is let the bike idle with sensors hooked up to it. Never had an issue passing it, just annoyed by having to do it.
