When is a good time to go to the dragon?

A few of my fellow riders and I are trying to plan a trip to go to the tail for a long weekend, like a wednesday to sunday kind of deal.

any advise from people in the area as to when would be a good time to go?

We were thinking of going around early/mid August.

We were thinking of going around early/mid August.

It will be hot, and there will be a stupid amount of traffic. The best time to go is when School is in session, weather is cooler, and less people are out because there are less people on vacation. I went last month, it was still pretty chilly by local standards (60's durring the day, 40's at night, we picked an abnormally cold weekend by chance) but it was the perfect weather to strap on all the leathers and have some fun while not sweating balls, if you go in august it will be so humid breathing will be a challange.

Not that you wouldn't have fun, just not a time I'd want to go. Id wait till late september when the temps/humidity have dropped back off.

The Chalet in Maggie Valley is a great hotel to stay at, its about an hour and a half from the dragon itself, but its right off the BRP, there are great roads, the facility is little known and wonderful, we had a kitchen with utensils, bakeware, and everything in our room. but they only have about 10 rooms, so if its a large group they cant fit you all (its really more like a VERY nice apartment building than a motel, they have a laundry room and covered patio's and all. Even a grill you can use)

For bigger groups I recomend the Iron Horse Lodge, the group I meet with from the YZF forum every year stays there. Owners are very gracious and have a wonderful facility, and the prime rib on Saturdays is to die for

Isn't Wheels Through Time in Maggie Valley too? Ever see any 100 year old bikes on the Dragon?

Be sure to post when you are going and a couple of us can meet you there and ride with you. Myself or Jerry can drag you up and down the Skyway and the surrounding areas. I'm in Chattanooga and usually go every other weekend. We are heading up Saturday and probably will just do the Skyway, traffic will be bad this weekend because of the holiday.
