vfr800-- 120hp, 100ft-lbs???

Hey guys, I need to clear something up. A guy at work says his vfr800 (1998 ) dyno'd at 120rwhp, and 101ft-lbs with an aftermarket exhaust, and some other little mods. Is this totally unreasonable or what? He said the HRC kit gives it 190hp. Anyone know VFR's out there?

thanks

calitoz 09-07-2006 06:04 PM

is he referring to the 2000 cc version?

RymerC 09-07-2006 06:06 PM

nope, it's a 1998 vfr800 (800cc). he said it's got vtec too, but I was thinkin they didn't get that tilll later...

RymerC 09-07-2006 06:07 PM

he also said it's faster than his dad's 2002 zx-7r, which has zx12r jets, and a full muzzy system (which dynoed 117rwhp).

calitoz 09-07-2006 06:10 PM

it was a joke...:-)..my gixxer does not even make that much power....on the other hand, if he means a little mods by means of a nitros kit..well, I stand corrected.

I call this bullshit until I see it myself on a dyno

RymerC 09-07-2006 06:49 PM

that's what I said. He said he dyno'd it at bike week at daytona beach, and that's what it put down, 120hp, 101ft-lbs. Anyone know what a vfr800 with an exhaust and tune puts down? I'd guess around 105/55 maybe?

marmaladedad 09-07-2006 06:51 PM

Does he have a dyno sheet to prove it? Timeslips at the track? Sounds like someone is a major league bullshitter....and not a very good one.

RymerC 09-07-2006 06:58 PM

he says he has a dyno sheet. I'm sure it will get lost before I see it though. I mean, even if the dyno operator had some crazy correction factor figured in there, come on?

marmaladedad 09-07-2006 07:21 PM

HRC kit gives it 190?? WTF?

Honda didn't introduce VTEC to the Interceptor until '02.

RymerC 09-07-2006 07:31 PM

yeah, I just read that. He's sayin that since it's a detuned rc45 engine, you can just tune it up. I know he's full of it, I'd like some hard numbers though.

2002 only puts 95/45 down, so 120 is feasible with some mods, but the torque is doubtful IMHO even with a TUNED RC45 engine

SuperBling's link backs up the HP factor (possible with tuning), but has no torque info that I saw.

L8RGYZ 09-07-2006 08:45 PM

"My t-shirt is faster than you t-shirt" kind of guy.

RymerC 09-07-2006 09:11 PM

yeah, when he got the exhaust he talked about how he couldn't believe he picked up 20hp, because the factory exhaust was so restrictive to slow down the 'race' engine.

oh well, he's busted

marmaladedad 09-07-2006 09:29 PM

LoL

And we were just having a "squid" discussion in that other thread...

mikstr 09-07-2006 09:45 PM

BTW, the ZX-12 was FI, so no jets. Also, the 1998 was not VTEC. Find out what this guy is smoking :)

Of course, he may be talking about a modded NR 750 engine (32 valves, oval pistons..). Anyone interested in some prime swamp land? :)

No thanks! But I've got a bridge you can buy... :D

mikstr 09-08-2006 05:22 PM

sorry, I already have a couple of bridges....now I have to get rid of the swamp to pay for the last one :)

I own a '99 and with some very significant mods I've only been able to get just shy of 110hp at the rear wheel and around 59lb/ft torque from mine. TBR high mount full system with carbon can, K&N filter, PCII mapped on the dyno, gearing change, yellow box, Fox twin clicker, and Racetech .95's with gold rebound and compression valves. The 5th Gen VFR ('98-'01) were advertised at only 98hp. That was measured at the crank. The sad thing here is that the VFR is about 80lbs heavier than the VTR with about the same hp. and the VFR 'WILL' smoke the VTR in the quarter mile.

Your friend might be referring to the RC 30 race bikes that the VFR evolved from. That engine was totally different in many ways from the street version, Different cranks, different firing order,...among other tweaks.

"Racetech .95's with gold rebound and compression valves"

I heard those are good for about 3.17 hp at the rear wheel? Oops, gotta go, phone is ringing...maybe it's a buyer for the swamp, uh, I mean, real estate :)

Everyone's got to be a wiseguy!

mikstr 09-09-2006 09:34 AM

Sorry, I just couldn't resist :)

cheers

Dont mean to sound like an ass...but are you kidding me?
My VTR constantly OWNS this VFR 800 out at the track...the VFR's stock are way overrated...

You don't sound like an ass, but be a little more specific about VFR's being overrated. My experience is that the VTR gets out on the VFR but the VFR screams by it on the big end. There is only about a tenth difference between the two. My times reflect this and me being able to be the rider on one bike and turn around and make a run on the other takes the rider variable out of the deal. I own both bikes in fact I have a VFR and two VTR's.

NOrrTH 09-10-2006 05:29 PM

The Viffer guy I ride with can't keep up on the highway. He is VERY heavy mind you hehe

AZZKIKER 09-10-2006 05:32 PM

How can a bike that is way heavier than a VTR and makes a little less hp be faster?

How about this one guys. I have a buddy with an Aprilia Falco that has been unrestricted. Same engine as the Mille,..Right? I was on my '99 VFR and we were doing roll on drag races from about 60 mph or so. He couldn't believe how I was pulling away from him either. After a half of a mile or so he would catch me but just barely. Read the publications, their numbers support what I saying too. It's not so much the power that either bike makes but how it's delivered to the road. The V twin makes power very differently that the V four. The VFR (5th generation at least) is about a tenth quicker in the quarter mile than the VTR. I think you guys under estimate the capabilities of the VFR just like a good portion of the rest of the market. That bike is just plain versatile and just as fun to ride as the VTR.

I guess so.
