Anyone ever own one?
Ride one?

Saw one come up for sale for quite cheap and it seems like a fun cruiserish bike.


Any input appreciated.

Same engine as the VS800 Intruder which is known for it's self destructing crank. Also, the carb setup is a joke and syncing them is a MAJOR pain in the a$$.

Yes and no.

The motor is BASED off of the intruder but it is different.

Yeah I thought the carbs were odd, downdraft front card and sidedraft rear.

Interesting to hear about the cranks, every bit of info I've read online speaks of owners routinely putting on between 50k and 100+k miles on them. Only achilles heel I've read about is WAY TOO soft fork springs and 20-50k reg/rects.

I'll have to do a few more hours of research.

I used to own one. I loved it until my son's friend totaled it. It's not the strongest nor quick steering, but I found it really fun to ride. The plus side is the faster you go, the more stable it feels. I never had a bit of problem with the motor, and contrary to what is posted above, I found syncing the carbs to be really easy. the only negative was used parts becoming more scarce. I have been looking to pick up another one cheap if I can find it. they have a following though and tend to go for too much money unless in poor shape.

If you don't mind me asking... aside from the obvious displacement difference and probably different trans ratio, how are they different?

I'm not sure about the internals at all, but if I remember correctly, they are a direct bolt-up from the VS to the VX.

Daniel, I was a member of a pretty good forum which included european members too. I never once heard of a problem with crank problems. They only ran 90 to 93 here in the states, but in europe, they went through 97, I believe. I'll post a message over there and ask them. Maybe there's some history I've not seen before.

I actually used to have tons of fun on that thing riding across the Cherahola Skyway. In fact, that bike is what brought me back to sport bikes from cruisers, so I have a special fondness for it. I do like the VTR better, of course. it's like my VX800, but on steroids. I had put a PowerBronze half fairing on my VX and it had superbike bars on it so was a bit more aggressive riding position.

I'm referring to the VS800's we've purchased for our shop.. out of the 7 or so we've purchased 3 or 4 had bad cranks. Plus both of the mechanics that I worked with at the dealership a few years back hated the VS800's for that reason.

Also, disregard the "displacement difference" comment, I was think of the old VS700.

Originally, or perhaps after the 700 thing in the 80s, they were the 750, weren't they? I always heard everyone talk about them as being pretty bulletproof. The only significant problem I ever heard was about the rear drive unit that would wear down the splines. I always greased mine at tire changes and never had a problem as others reported. Several of the guys went to the VS800 only because it had some chrome parts on it.
