Sore legs?
I get sore legs, like really sore legs. And after a long ride they are sore for a couple of days. Ive had different bikes of different styles and I still get it.
I take breaks and stretch them when riding. Anybody got a clue why I get this? Im open to suggestions. |
Do any other activities (or inactivities) cause the problem? Does the condition present while riding or after you stop? Does the pain extend throughout the legs or is it more localized in the feet, calves, thighs, etc.?
Ask the internet about venous insufficiency. I'm not a doctor, I'm just some idiot on the internet. |
A brave sole that asks a bunch of gear heads about diagnosing problems with a very complex elctro/chemical machine. There are a lot of really good brains on the site, so maybe not such a bad idea.
Start with the simple, most likely causes and work the flow chart from there. Senior member? Thirst response goes down as we age. Consumption of foods that act as diuretics make this situation worse. Inflammatory response to items in your diet (western diet and US diet in particular) and environment can cause a verity of symptoms. These symptoms seem to get more debilitating as we age (don't ask me how I know this). Not so much fun when pain gets in the way of what you enjoy doing. |
Weight, height, age and more specific locations of the pain may help. I've been riding for 48 years and "understand" pain. I may know something that helps.

Im 46, 220lbs, 172cm tall. No other medical conditions.
Its my whole legs. Its more an extreme ache than a sharp pain. |

I got a buddy dealing with something similar. Found something wrong with his spine. Was told it was (I don't know how to spell it, but it sounds like....) syatica. I would suggest going to your family doctor and letting them know what's going on.

That would be sciatica. A very old friend of mine!

I get them bad in my hands, especially but also in the legs and hips. If they're bad enough I'll be sore for a few days. Must take quinine and potassium as needed and before a ride. |

Symptom : Sore legs while riding
Cure : Stop riding Sorry Spokes, it was too easy. Nevertheless, see your Dr is probably the best advice on here so far. Plus, do not be insulted by this, but, your weight vs height ratio probably may be a contributing factor in this equation. |

I think a neurologist specializing in sports medicine might be consulted for this but at least start with a general practitioner of internal medicine.
You didn't really define "long ride" in terms of hours. How long is long? |

+1 on stretching. Seems useless but works wonders. I used to do plyometrics (jump training) that marathon runners couldn't do. It really helped but is awful to do.
Also mountain bike 5 times a week to train for racing. That helps tons. I was shocked when I finally tried yoga. I immediately felt way lighter on the bike and less tired after the rides / races. Stretching is easy too. So worth a try. And don't forget the stompgrips...... |

Do you find that you are tense when you ride? I tend to have a problem with sourness because I am a cranked up worrier and I am prone to tense up when I ride. For me this shows up in sore arms and shoulders.

I have just experienced sore feet last Friday while riding with Mikstr. We went for a 4-5 hour ride, and after about 1 1/2 hours, I began feeling discomfort in my feet. It was like neuralgia, I just wanted to stop, and put my feet back on the ground, as if I wasn't getting enough blood flow to them.
The problem I believe is I have replaced my stock foot pegs for some after market ones with little support, and, no rubber pads on them to absorb vibrations. The other issue is I very rarely get to ride long rides anymore, and don't remember if I have ever had this issue in the past with my stock pegs. :banghead: Does anyone else have, or ever had this problem ? Your thoughts/potential solution ? Maybe I should install those big flat foot rests they have on customs. All I'd need then would be stuffed dice hanging from my mirrors...maybe pink ones at that. I wish we'd have a smiley that points a gun to his head, and then pulls the trigger. This would of been the right time for one now. |
I recently gave had fantastic luck with two visits to a local Doctor of Osteopathic medicine. I gave availed myself of hundreds of Chiropractic treatments from five different doctors of chiropractic spread over three states and never has anyone afforded me the degree of comfort I am currently experiencing... Good stuff, powerful medicine! I highly recommend a visit.

One cause of leg/feet pain is vascular problems - Intermittent claudication. Symptoms for me were when walking (5 -10 minutes range - hence why its known as 'window shoppers condition') and when wicket keeping in cricket (crouching on my haunches) a burning sensation in my lower calves and feet.
Not so much when riding or even cycling- however it was caused from smoking and too many bacon sarnies and subsequently I needed an operation (fem pop) to help keep the oxygenated blood flowing by some clever replumbing. Stock riding position in leathers with the stock footpegs after a while can constrict bloodflow and I have to literally hang the leg off and give it a shake to get the circulation going. Now ride my comfy ol' armchair of a Transalp 650 more day-to-day or leccy pushbike and the VTR is more a Sunday bike for a thrash through the twisties. |
I haven't ruled out blood flow, but, I'm more on the thin side, and play alot of hockey, eat lots of fruit and vegies. Plus my job keeps me walking alot, so, I figure I would have symptoms with these other activities.
I believe in osteopathic medicine, it has done marvels for me in the past. However, before I go back to see her, and believe me guys when I say this, she is worth every penny. This girl is hot :leghump:. Early 30's, and a body that would make a Victoria's Secrets model jealous. Sorry, back to the issue at hand. She doesn't stretch out the visits for nothing, 2 max 3 visits, and the pain is gone. But, before going spending money at her place, I will be making a few lesser expenses, like reinstalling the OEM pegs to see if the vibration from the Chi-Knees pegs themselves is not the culprit. |

Sorry to hear about this for you. Is there a cure or are you screwed with this ? Perhaps something to alleviate the pain ?
