It's RF excited plasma, pretty cool but there are some downsides.

It runs on a rediculous amount of energy so it requires active cooling.
They do come in the rear projector LiFi Televisions though, and you can buy them at frys or bestbuy.

For measure, the latest Cree Q5 LED's are up to 107-112 lumens per watt, and the Seoul P4 V bin that's about to be released has a efficency of 118-154 lumens per watt. The benefit with these are that you can run them with a heatsink instead of a huge cooling tub.

They are already being run in cars, namely the Ls600hL. Look one up, and check out the headlights. 3 projectors with LED's in them for each headlight... not as efficient as HID but it's a good start. In motorcycle applications, you can run Cree's or Seoul LEDs in taillights, and all you would need are 4 or 5. Hell, if you wanted to, you could run one huge one, but they get less efficient at higher wattages.
