Just picked it up last week..thought it might be fun to put a euro bar on and have something else to cruise around in. Not sure if the maintenance will be a bitch though...kinda an impulse buy really! |
Nice looking /6. Maintainance is easy, but get your self a Clymers manual for specs, etc. Join the Airheads list for the best advice from some guys that know these bikes inside and out. Set up, these bikes are super smooth, offer a more relaxed pace, and will run forever.

I had an '83 R100RS for 15 years before discovering the VTR. Maintenance is easy. Valve adjustment is easy. I was eventually doing mine every 1,000 miles after 60,000 on the odo, then discovered that the valves were badly eroded and mushroomed. I had the dealer do the valves. That's about the only issue I had other than the rectifier bridge and the alternator rotor.
I sold it with 66,000 miles in '05 for $1000 more than I paid for it. |
Well for what it's worth I have no experience owning one but from seeing enough older (and newer) beemers for sale they seem to hold there value very well, and while "low mileage" for a sportbike is usually under 10k miles, "low mileage" for beemers seems to be under 100k lol. Which tells me they're probably pretty reliable. Anyway you sure look like you got a nice one, that bike looks beautiful. Enjoy!

Yeah other Beemer riders would say "your's only has 60,000 on it". But then my '78 CX500 had 78,000 when I sold it, and with no engine work...Honda.

Yeah I see bmw's for sale advertised "low mileage" and I'll look and it'll have 60k miles on it. Goldwings are like that too. It's like when you see a truck (peterbilt not pickup) for sale..."low miles" is like 400k lol.

haha - I paid a bit more than that - but the crazy guy I bought it from brought it back to life - cleaned the carbs, new tires, etc. Could use some new spokes - and did i mention how hideous the ape hangers are?

100K mi on /5, /6, & /7 BMWs. Designed by the factory for owner participation in the maintenance.
The BIG item, usually ignored by the previous owner is the lubrication of the splines between the input shaft of the transmission and the clutch. And it takes a special grease. If done at the required service intervals, then there is almost no wear at all. I did my own heads, including a port job, my own jugs, carbs etc and I'm mostly thumbs. I can read, that made the difference. Good, honest motorcycles, those airheads, will never be a rocket ship, but there will be examples still on the road after I'm dust. |
thanks for the input guys - just ordered a Clymers. I have 10 thumbs but I too can read, hopefully that will help. We'll just see how often I ride it. Don't want the superchicken to get jealous.
