Absolutely one of the most wanted bikes on my list..... Timeless looks IMO.

uchi 03-23-2011 03:09 PM

wow man thats sexy. that would be one hell of a fairing kit to copy and make for our bikes :D

VTRsurfer 03-23-2011 03:45 PM

My wife and I saw one on our Sunday morning breakfast run at Cook's Corner (local Orange County biker hangout) last year.

There was some Italian bike parked next to it, I don't remember what it was, and all the Harley guys were checking it out, clueless as to what the red Honda was.

thetophatflash 03-23-2011 03:51 PM

I remember a lengthy tech article on it in '93. Might have been in Motorcyclist. It took a while to get my brain around oval pistons and rings. An overbore would be expensive!

finepooch 03-23-2011 06:27 PM

yup, amazing machine. bending racing rules in a very creative way. ever see the engine internals drawing or pics? amazing. someone was thinking.

ever see the video of the girl dropping one? i got choked up.

That was what I was attepting to express- about the trip to Barber's Museum.. The quick touch (just to know that NR750 -was really there) Unbelievable. the lines of that bike... I am with Wolverine.. one of the bikes that will aways be a bike wanted to own...

Imagine that, clueless Harley riders? Who would have thought........

Its said to be the source of inspiration for the look of the Duc 916.

Furrybiker 03-24-2011 03:34 PM

Hang on boys put your cheque books away, these guys are known for being dodgy, and they have advertised this bike at various prices for years.

Occasionally you see these come up for sale in Europe for about half the money, bargain!!

This bike ranks up there (for me) w/ the Desmo and the Britten as most desirable.

Ostensibly a v-8 bike. I think my hawk looks as good. (to me anyway). The hawk has alot of the looks of this bike. Can't say the same for what honda has put out since.

thank you for the motorcycle porn.

i see a lot of 916 in that bike. if someone claimed ducati copied it i could not disagree with them.

finepooch 03-25-2011 06:33 PM

what does it sound like?

ooohhhh, here;s an idea... make a v-twin oval piston out of a v-four!

smokinjoe73 03-25-2011 09:23 PM

For all its techno babble this bikes numbers arent that great. 120-something hp & way less torque than the hawk but heavier? Its somewhat true that bikes keep improving.

VTRsurfer 03-25-2011 10:00 PM

From 1985 until just over 2 years ago, when I retired, I had a June, 1985 issue of Cycle News in my auto classroom with a feature article on the NR500. I used it every semester when I taught engines and 4-stroke cycle in my Tune-up and Emission Control class.

The NR500 had only a 35mm* stroke, and developed incredible HP/liter numbers for that time. I used it to show my students what could be done with innovative thinking. The article stated that the bike was extremely hard to ride, somewhat due to the internal friction created by the long flat cylinder walls. Evidently closing the throttle would cause the rear wheel to just about lock up. A slipper clutch supposedly only partially solved that problem.

But jeez, 8 valves per cylinder, 2 rods per piston. Japanese engineering at its finest.

*the stroke might have been 36mm, but I remember telling my students that the stroke was about equal to the width of a roll of film. By the time I retired in 2008, my students knew about as much about a roll of film as they did about 33 1/3 rpm records.

The frame looks like a Vfr. It's a trophy to put in the living room for sure.
