WTB: VTR1000 fork lower half
im looking for a set of fork lowers for my VFR project. i want to run the VTR1000/CBR900RR front calipers and these are the parts i need to do so
both lower fork tubes. this is the part that your wheel bolts to. and speaking of the wheel... front axle. mine will be slightly too short for these. and if i can get them, i would love to have the internals as well (fork cap, cartridge, ect.) basicaly i need a whole front end minus the chrome slider tubes. SO IF YOU HAVE A WRECKED FRONT END WITH THE AFOREMENTIONED PARTS GOOD then i would love to get them. but the damper rod cant be bent. i think if it is then the rebound adjustment rod will be fubar as well, and i dont htink i can straighten them. hit me back please. |
The reb adj rod is easy to straighten. The damper rod is steel and will be tough to straighten. - not impossible, but tough. I may have some lowers but that's about it. I already had a pair that were going to go for powdercoating but I might have another pair left over from nuhawk's or Stumpy's forks. It's really up to them since it's their parts. They just happen to be in my garage. :)

I have a set of internals and lowers.... the only thing is the rebound needles are ground down.... (if you do s search onthe site, you'll find the suggested mod).
Anyway... should Greg/Nuhawk not have what you need, PM me, and we can figure something out. J. |
I can hook you up have extra. Just let Hawkrider finish up for me. should be no longer than a week 10 days so I have it all sorted out ok.

Ten/Four:winner: I'm behind Stumpy on Greg's bench and I will have a set of lowers available (and a heap of other shit) after this rebuild. I promised everybody that I would post a list as we got closer and I intend to do just that. Some of it will be some good stuff, some not so good but cheap (freight) but just give us a little time!

as long as the lowers are not all scratched up and whatnot i will be good. this is going on a custom bike, and i want it to look good. this is my first endeavor into custom bikes.

After hawkrider is done with my forks and I know what I have for extra parts. I will ask him to photo some lowers for you. No need to ship them to my house and then ship to you. If he is willing I will have them shiped right to you ok. What other parts do you need if any from the forks. I will be talking to him on phone this weekend

well, i was going to try and find cbrf3 cartridges, but im told that the ones from a vtr are functionally identical.
so what i need is everything BUT the bushings, inner fork tube, and the fork seals. i have nice straight fork tubes of my own, and the rest of the parts for the VFR, but i would rather have the extra adjustability that the VTR has (like preload for example). i have a set of VFR cartridges i could steal shims from. wouldnt that be enough for parts? i could always go get some from a few other bikes i know of in the area. my bike wont be as heavy as a stock VFR, due to race fairings and an aluminum subframe, but it wont be a light one either. i guess 450 wet maybe? i dont know really. |
Your shimming should primarily be based on the spring you use and the oil you choose. Lighter oils require a heavier/thicker shim stack on both compression and rebound. There are advantages of using a thinner oil over a thicker one. I'm not going to get into it now since I gotta get to bed (working nights). A stronger spring will require less compression damping and more rebound damping. FWIW, the rebound damping needs to be about 3 times stronger than the compression damping.
Do a Google search for "Independent Bike Suspension Forum" and do a lot of reading. I wish I could just give you the recommended stack but that's sort of a trade secret amongst suspension tuners. I will point you in the right direction to learn though. Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for life! |
Oh, the spring will be dependent on the weight of the bike, weight of the rider, and the riding style. So don't limit yourself to .90kg/mm if you don't need to.

Okay, the RT calculator is pretty good. Sometimes it comes up a little on the light side.
