"The battery costs what?"

I thought the parts guy was kidding, even laughed and said "what does it really cost." One hundred ninety six dollars, wtf? For a battery?

At any rate the bikes earlier then 02 use the cheaper battery at $110 still high, the older batteries are an inch or so taller then the newer ones. Anyone know if the old battery might still fit?

I am off to check batteries plus tomorrow. The way I see it even if a cheaper battery lasts half the time I still win, well depending on price.

That sucks man. I need a battery for mine aswell. Looks original has a sticker saying it was checked in 03 last. So I think I may get another just like it simply because of how long itlasted.

I ran into the same problem last summer. I think I ended up using the same size as in a TL1000 for around $65. It had the same top dimensions, but it wasn't as deep. It was 10AH vs the 12AH OEM.

thanks all for the recommendations. I just don't understand why if the lead prices are affecting battery costs (what the sales guy said) why a battery a quarter the size of an auto battery is twice the cost.

niche market, has nothing to do with the cost of lead. They just know that they can screw you. The mark up on the 196er is huge (80). The mark up on the $110 battery is maybe $16-20 at best. I dont get it. oh well.

If your interested in a a battery that is on the cutting edge.. and costs like it, but saves a huge amount of weight.. And while clostly is more like a performance part then repair part..
Have a look. http://turntechbattery.com/TurnTech%...y/Welcome.html

I'm going to get a 7.5 for a dual test in the SH and my DRZ485.. If it works in both, I'll buy a second..

I have a '99 and the dealership told me last spring that a battery would be ~160. I shat myself, changed my underwear, and got one from Autozone for ~65. I could probably replace the battery once every other year and still stay well ahead.

I ended up spending the extra money on a good battery charger... since then for some reason all my batteries in different vehicles seem to need attention and I'm getting good usage out of that battery charger!

(with battery charger I was still well ahead...)

Hey, I don't feel so bad after reading this. I had to put a new battery in the Buell this past spring and it was $100 at the Harley shop. I thought they were ALWAYS more expensive than jap bikes! :-D

That high for a battery???? I hope not, I need one for my 98. The last battery I bought for my 93 VFR was 60ish, I believe.

On a 1k twin, CCA is the big deal. Unless you run at least 2-5ah in series, you're not going to have enough; i.e. = 4# 10ah (less than 7# OE 12ah) which may be bare bones but space then is an issue. Forget about accessories...

That's why I'm hoping there is a market for Lithium batteries. I'm going to start making them over the off season and will be targetting at $150 selling price. No cost savings really, but for your money you might as well save 6lb while you are at it!

So I ended up purchasing a battery for $59 it was slightly less amp hours, 11 instead of 12. It should work just fine. Even if it only lasts half as long as the yuasa I will still be ahead.

Haynes repair manual says 10ah. Bikebandit parts fiche says YTX12-BS which is 10ah. Not sure what to believe. ~mike

With the lithium mod discussed (or even a AGM battery), it would be optimum to get 12ah but 10 ah is OE for all years.

It looks like the only difference in size between the 10ah and the 12ah is about a half inch in height. Will it fit?

The "12" in the part number is the amp-hour rating of the battery!
