List of Bolt-On Front Brake Mods
#31
Yeah, but the piston diameter is the same as the original on the VTR... so no "upgrade" just design...

I don't know about GSX-Rs except for the 2000-2001 GSX-R 1000. Those are a direct bolt-on.
The F4, F4i, 600RR, RC51, 929RR, 954RR calipers are all externally identical, and they need slight grinding to clear the mounting bracket on the VTR fork leg. Other than that, they bolt on and work quite well. The caliper piston and master cylinder sizes vary from model to model and year to year. Here is a little chart I put together awhile back with all the data. I also believe the 919 calipers and maybe some others will fit, but I haven't really looked into it.
2003-2004 CBR600RR mc 11/16” (17.4625 mm)
caliper pistons 32mm/30mm
2000-2001 CBR929RR mc 19mm
caliper pistons 34mm/30mm
2002-2003 CBR954RR mc 11/16” (17.4625 mm)
caliper pistons 32mm/30mm
2000-2001 RC51 mc 19mm
caliper pistons 34mm/32mm
2002-present RC51 mc 11/16” (17.4625 mm)
caliper pistons 32mm/30mm
1999-Present CBR600F4(i) mc 5/8” (15.87mm)
caliper pistons 34mm/32mm

And how does the 00-01' RC51 calipers compare to the F4i calipers as far as braking performance?

Calipers are the same, so I imagine that they are identical? Makes no real sense to make different parts when you can use the same, saving money in assembly?

That is exactly the type of information a Doofus like me needs and was hoping for.
Thanks.

ok stay with me now...if the SH calipers are pretty close to the same size as the "upgraded" honda bikes, wouldn't it make sense to just upgrade pads, lines and a new master from one of the larger honda bikes? (14mm compared to 19mm seems like a big difference to me)
or am i missing something once again? the GSXR 6 pots makes all kinds of sense...3 points per caliper clamping compared to 4 that i can wrap my head around, but why change calipers to a caliper that looks basically the same and isn't much if any larger?
sorry if i'm upsetting anyone with my ignorance!

Well, As I said, I think they are identical, and I see no reson that they shouldn't be... No other variables that I know of... So yeah I have had the same idea for a while now...
Pads are already "upgraded" on mine and SS lines are on... So I'm going to stick a larger MC on and see what it does...

Apparently the MC from a 900RR will let me use the same lever, wich would be nice... but any 19mm will do... I have all winter to look for parts...
It's subzero temps and icy roads here now...

Man is is a great thread, as this is the last mod I'm looking to do.
My buddy/mechanic (for things I don't feel like doin) had stated that the GSXR1000 calibers fit the VTRs.
But is anyone changing out rotors?
Need to upgrade the fronts - but want to do it the most economically.
Currently only have Galfer SS lines - the rest stock '02 VTR
Thus, from reading above an easy fix would be 954RR M/C & better pads or should I go w/ GSXR calibers, 954 M/C + pads & finally, stay w/ stock rotors?
Thanks Guys

Maybe this pic will help...
Here's a pic to help you those see the physical differences in a 929/954/RC51/F4i Caliper (On left....F4i in pic)vs. a VTR caliper (on right).
The GSXR1000 Calipers (I forget which years fit...Ask Superhawk 22 for that) do bolt up...some have said 4 pots are lighter than 6 pots...I don't know...it up to what you like and that both are a great upgrade to your bike...

I just got Redman's RC51 MC and I am awaiting the pair of 2001 RC51 calipers this week. I plan to install them and get a least one or two rides in before the weather gets too cold here in No. Virginia.
I'll post some pictures of the upgrade.

It's a whole different world with both of those upgrades together Reaper.....you'll love it. You can go up 10mph on your favorite road and not even notice it. Dive deep into corners, KNOWING, there's plenty of brake to reel you in.

so what would be the best m/c for the gsxr 6 pots for firm feel that would directly bolt up?i just bought new levers and would like a m/c that will work with mu current lever i have now.anyone know what size the 2001-2002 gsxr master is?i know that i love the way the front brakes feel on my tlr1000,firm and powerful.would like the sh to feel that way too.

Dunno if it will give you the feel you wan't but it should definetly be better than the stock M/C...
Also from visual inspection I'm pretty sure the 929/954 M/C also works with the stock VTR lever... But that's without taking anything apart so don't put your trust in that completely...

Well after helping my mate wich has absolutely no mechanical skills (or tools!) replace a bent lever on a 900RR, I can definetly say that the lever is the same... I offered to swap evenly for my M/C with a straight lever... Unfortunetely he refused and opted to pay me for my spare lever instead... Bummer...

The 929/954 (and 600RR and RC51) mc uses a different lever from the stock VTR mc; the 929/954 lever is thicker top to bottom. The F4i mc uses the same (thinner) lever as the VTR.

Aha... ok... scribbles notes...
As I said, I only eyeballed the 954 lever...
Couldn't we find your previous list and complete it with these parts of info as well (and add stock VTR for reference)... Would be an excelent sticky...

Well I installed the RC51 MC and lever with the new RC51, circa 2001, calipers on my bike and what a huge difference in stopping power, and this is for a 260# rider and gear. The upgrade cost approximately $150.00.
Had to grind off some of the lower portion of the upper piston because it would not clear the bolt tab, similar to the F4i caliper mod.
Anyway, went out and rode 100+ miles today in 40 degree weather with a smile on my face all the way.

Yes, they have bigger pistons, yes they look slimmer... No not alone...
That is the bigger calipers do make them better, but you really need a larger M/C than stock to make a difference...
