So as some of you know from my posts over the past year and a half, my bike was totalled. Not serious wreckage, mechanically and structurally fine, but there was a lot of cosmetic damages. That was in late fall of 2012 and I decided I wanted to tear it down and go through as much as I could... new gaskets, paint, etc... Well back in April of 2013 my son's mother and I seperated and she decided to charge me an obscene amount of money for child support... at the same time I had some really good luck with my career situation and then shortly after had some really bad luck... I did what I could to make as much progress on my bike but due to my financial situation it ended up sitting in my garage for about 6 months with no money to finish it. Finally at the end of February this year was able to reduce my child support amount to an appropriate level and have been able to atleast get my bike on the road again with the bare minimum...

So here it sits at the moment... not pretty, not finished, but rideable for the first time in a year and a half...

I decided this will be my build thread as well, seeing as I have big plans, and if I actually start planning it and collecting parts this early in the season, I might actually be able to complete the mods by next season...

So the modifications I did while it was down...

04-06 CBR1000RR complete front end including the bigger throttle tube
15-42 gearing
swapped out my homemade MCCT's for proper machined MCCT's
a lot of maintenance
and a lot of paint

So here is a list of mods that i would like to do, this is not written in stone and changes in financial situation may affect this list... therefore i wont list internal engine mods because they are the big ticket items...

And dont expect an update every day, i work full time, go to school full time and im a part time father...

Custom bodywork
Custom lighting, not sure about headlight
Custom gas tank
Adjustable rearsets
New cluster, not sure which one
CBR1000RR rear wheel
Heavy duty clutch
One off fairing stay
One off sub frame
Stick coils
Larger rads
Exhaust, not sure what direction i will go with that one

Theres probably more i just cant think of them right now... some of these mods are being started right away and some i will be collecting parts and doing as money allows...

Out of curiosity, why the heavy clutch?

Longevity purpose mainly... the clutch thats in there is the factory clutch and it works fine but its getting way down there... due to future plans for a stage 1 engine build i figure if im putting one in there i might as well upgrade...

Have you used a heavy duty one?

Nice work so far! I really like the color combo. You and I are kind of on the same track. Both have the same front end, almost the same future mods, and might be the same color. I'm not copying you, honest!

Yea the color for the bodywork has still yet to be decided but i definitely needed to paint the engine and frame bits black... it ties everything togethed very nicely i think

ok so last year when I started this thread I had big dreams and a very small wallet . I ended up losing my job and struggled with part time employment to scrape by. Now I have a great job, job security, and awesome benefits.

I have been working long hours at my job and on my bike and its now time to revive this build thread.

what Im currently working on;

paint, I am painting the gas tank, tail section, front fender, headlight bezel and eventually the wheels when I get around to taking them off.

yes it is staying naked and im doing it properly

I'm redoing some things that I hacked together last year just to get her on the road (headlight, turn signals, hoses, cleaning up the engine enamel that didnt survive the winter, etc...)

I am also finally getting around to putting a mosfet R/R in there.

I have a universal digital gauge cluster on the way so I'll finally have a working tach after over 4 years of not having one.

rejet/sync the carbs(running way too rich at the moment)

now on to the future plans (I have a steady paycheck so not just dreaming this time )

stick coils

rewiring the whole bike (anyone have any good sources for wire/plugs in the states?)

custom belly pan, tail section

cosmetics (levers, gas cap, block off plates, etc...)

slip-ons

trying to figure out what to do with the radiators... I dont care what anyone says, the sidemounts dont look right on a naked SH

shock upgrade

I'm sure there are things I intentionally left out or forgot about, but lets start with that...pictures coming soon

got a few pics of the paint progress... headlight bezel and tailsection need some help from sandable primer and more sanding before pre-paint primer and paint go on.

gas tank has been cleaned of all previous paint, seams and filler area have been coated with heavy duty epoxy paint to prevent rust and corrosion, two small dings have been bondo'd as well as the top outer edge so I can provide some sort sharper edge for cosmetic reasons... the vision I have for my custom bodywork (once I get around to it) will have sharper edges and lines then factory and may clash cosmetically with the overall roundedness of the gas tank.

I agree. None with rads on the side really look right. This one comes the closest.



Undertail cosmetically seems to be the best option.

That is a lot of Bondo. I hope you don't have issues with cracking or lifting in the future. Did you apply Bondo to bare metal or did you use metal etching primer, then Bondo?

xeris, that is a pretty nice setup... the ideas running through my head at the moment are front mount SV rad or undertail but that is definitely an option there... Im leaning more towards the front mount because the undertail, although a single rad, would seem to me to be a lot of extra weight due to plumbing and more fluid capacity. how much I dont know but I know the front mount looks good and would be a lot easier to fit.

crux, lol, I know thats way too much bondo but the night I was working on it I had the heat cranked way up in the shop and literally didnt have time to scrap the excess off before it started hardening. I have a lot of sanding to do in my future on that one...

And I sanded the gas tank down with 80 grit and thoroughly cleaned it prior to application... I hope it doesnt lift or crack but there isnt going to be much bondo on there when Im done sanding, like I said I just didnt have enough time to work with it.

so Ive thought about putting handlebars on my bike for quite some time, Ive read many threads on the advantages and disadvantages of doing so... however I cant for the life of me find side by side pictures of the different "bends" actually mounted on bikes. I have been able to find pictures of the different bends side by side without actually stating what bar is what bend, and I have seen charts with all the measurements of the bars but that doesnt help me visualize it...

so here are my questions... Im looking for a low bend that closely replicates the angle of factory clip-ons. has anyone used the "low bend" or a similar low bend? comments? pictures? anything will help... sorry, dont really know how to word what Im trying to ask

Alright had to take the day off of work for a dentist appointment so I was able to get some work done. Finished sanding everything and got a good coat of primer on everything. Have a little touch up sanding to do tomorrow and might have to give those areas a quick blast of primer tomorrow before moving on to paint.

Those KTM side rads are sweet. Probably my favorite SH alternate rad setup that I've seen.

Looks almost like a Buell air scoop.

Which ones? The earlier or later SuperHawk clipons or the CBR1000RR clipons you're runnning now? (If those are factory)

And VTR1000F to be honest I didnt know there was a difference between the earlier and later superhawks(if there is one) all I know is with the CBR front Im leaning way forward and its killing my hands, and I havent even lifted the rear at all... however I am in desperate need of some new grips so hopefully that will help some, I just know handlebars can be found for dirt cheap, thats why im not really looking into adjustable clip-ons.

like I said, Im going to be rewiring the whole bike (for many reasons), The weatherpack connectors are very beefy compared to factory but at least I'll be able to trust them 100%... or atleast 99%... and I'll be hiding as much of the wiring as possible for a clean looking streetfighter.

The gauge is a cheap chinese knock off but I have seen people set these up to run perfectly so for $70 to my door its worth a go. And of course I have a lot of changes to be made in the electrical department so everything I plan on changing will be installed and tested prior to the rewire.
