Oh Canada!!!
Me and a couple of buddies are thinking about doing a loop around Lake Superior so I'm looking for some input from our friends north of the border or anyone who may have done a similar trip.
One of my buddies has a cabin in northern Wisconsin near Iron Mountain, MI, and we would probably launch from there and go clockwise around the lake.
We'd more than likely try to camp rather than motel it.
1. Places to stay
2. Do we need a passport now?
3. Dispursement of gas stations?
4. When does riding season start on the north side of the lake?
5. When does it end?
6. What am I not thinking of?
Any relative input would be helpful.
Thanks,
Chilly

1. dunno
2. Currently, Canadians can still enter the U.S. by providing proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate and government-issued photo identification, such as a driver's licence.(from http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/agency/wh...comment-e.html)
3. dunno
4. It shouldn't be much different from here, so I would plan your trip to end before the end of september. Although, that could be bug season up there.
5. see above
6. Manitoulin island(if you are going for more than a day or 2)

your correct if your driving in. but here what my uncle sam said.
"The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 requires that by January 1, 2008, travelers to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada have a passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States. In order to facilitate the implementation of this requirement, the Administration is proposing to complete it in phases following a proposed timeline, which will be published in the Federal Register in the near future.
In the proposed implementation plan, which is subject to a period of initial public comment, the Initiative will be rolled out in phases, providing as much advance notice as possible to the affected public to enable them to meet the terms of the new guidelines. The proposed timeline will be as follows:
December 31, 2006 - Requirement applied to all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
December 31, 2007 - Requirement extended to all land border crossings as well as air and sea travel.
This is a change from prior travel requirements and will affect all United States citizens entering the United States from countries within the Western Hemisphere who do not currently possess valid passports. This new requirement will also affect certain foreign nationals who currently are not required to present a passport to travel to the United States. Most Canadian citizens, citizens of the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda, and to a lesser degree, Mexican citizens will be affected by the implementation of this requirement. "

I lived in Thunder Bay (top of Lake Superior) for a short period of time.
Nice part of the country.
Having flown in and out, I cannot provide any assistance for your travel plans,
however I can say that riding season begins end of April-to May. May and June are good for riding, but throwing camping in the mix means that you will have to deal with black flies...which are bad in May-early June. End of June through August are prime for bike / camping. September nights in a tent can be a bit on the cool side but doable. A mid September run would see some leaves changing colour, warm days, crisp nights, crisp throttle response, crisp throttle response...
oh ya, and spectacular views of the lake and surrounding mountains
