Moriwaki VTR (the real McCoy)

Seems our friend Gilson got his grubby paws on one of only two existing full-race Moriwaki VTRs (as prepared by Roger Ditchfield himself):

I'd love to have that for my track bike.

i'm glad to hear he didn't pass it up.

That thing is extremely rare. I think they only made about 8 crankshafts capable of withstanding the Stage 3 build. And they were, shall we say, "prohibitively expensive". Something like $2k

edited above.

Those cranks were expensive, but not that expensive! With the RC51 coming out, demand was low.

Look, it even has stock CCT's, run for your lives! It seems some people aren't afraid of them.

Anybody notice the airbox? It looks like a custom ram air, fed from the vents on the front of the fairing.

For an engine that gets rebuilt after every race, I'd use them.

going out on a limb here, since i have never had a problem with not even 1 honda tensioner.
it seems to me that to many people rely to much on engine braking.
keep the chain tight in the direction it was meant to run and there are no problems.
blip and shift ,match the revs, dont dump and over rev.

Roger Ditchfield, who built the bike, noted that stock CCTs typically fail as a result of one of two conditions:
1) bike is left to idle for long periods of time while on sidestand
2) long overruns (compression braking) from high speeds

As neither of these is a situation encountered by a racebike, he had no issues with using them on this bike.

On racebikes it's usual to replace the reservoar with a hose... Can be seen as a black hose on a blue nipple in the pics... Doesn't break as easily once you crash (and easy to fix/replace) and less weight...

That is Moriwaki's carbon ram-air setup. They built a carbon airbox, with side intakes, since the ram-air could not go through the frame head. I think it required the hand-built aluminum fuel tank.

It was in the catalog, but that's the only one I've ever seen on a bike other than the catalog specimen.

I just looked at my '01 Moriwaki catalog, which I happen to have here.

The ram-air apparently worked with the stock fuel tank.

The aluminum endurance-racing fuel tank was for the RC51.

So RCVTR what crank is in my bike, I thought it was a ST3 motor. It puts out 130 on the Dyno, that sounds ST3 to me.

I wonder about that clutch cover, I would love a slipper clutch.

MC, yours is a modified, stock crank. Any more than 130 HP was not possible. But they would run reliably at that level. At least that's my recollection. You have the kit transmisson, and superbike exhaust system, though. Good thing Bob snapped the brittle wrist pin and sawed the old engine in half before he sold it... That made a mess of things.

As I understand it, Roger was one of the few to build one with the forged crank. I think that engine was putiing out more than 140 HP.

That sounds about right, I was told when my motor was fresh it made 140 and a bit on race gas. I am really happy with the bike and the motor, it was at Barber last weekend and will be at VIR in 3 weeks.

It also has Carillo rods, to get the mass down.
It's a testament to the attention to detail that it is still running reliably.

Your bike is also a rare piece.

Hi Micky, sorry that I missed this thread. I hope to take some photos of her with the clothes off. I'll get some new tyres and give it a go...

The chap that sold it to me, who is also selling the ST2, is now selling some brand new, never fitted, still in the Moriwaki box, Morwaki Carbon fairings including the carbon airbox and two sets of carbon ram air tubes. He gave me first dibs on it all but I can't bring myself to buy it, (not to mention crashing it!)... I'll advertise it on here for him soon as.

The link to the Firestorm UK page is down. I'll update my website with pictures hopefully this weekend if it's sunny and not raining!.

Thanks for your interest!
Gilson
